Sentence upheld for man who ran down pensioner

Sentence upheld for man who ran down pensioner (ANSA) – Bolzano, November 18 – An appeals court in northern Italy on Monday upheld a 12-year sentence for a man guilty of running down and killing a pedestrian with his SUV in an attempt to evade police. Hafid El Maharzi, a 30-year-old Moroccan national, ran down pensioner Guglielmo Andriolo in December, 2011 as he crossed the street in the city of Bolzano.

El Maharzi was speeding and under the influence of alcohol, and had been pulled over by police when he sped away prior to running over the victim. The court also fined El Maharzi 700,000 euros to be paid to the victim’s family.
