Investigators probing Rome embryo mix-up

P(ANSA) – Rome, April 22 – At least three medical staff members were involved in a mix-up of embryos at Rome’s Sandro Pertini hospital during assisted-fertility treatments that led to a woman carrying twins not genetically hers, investigators said Tuesday.BRThe human error could have occurred during any one of three steps: retrieval of the egg and sperm, storage of the test-tubes, and implantation of the fertilized embryos.BRThe embryos were mixed up because the surnames of the two couples involved were very similar, police said.BR/P
