Far East Film Festival opening in Italy

P(ANSA) – Udine, April 24 – With the international premieres of ‘Aberdeen’, a bourgeois drama by Pang Ho-cheung, and ‘Fuku-chan of FukuFuku Flats’, a surreal comedy by Fujita Yosuke, the Far East Film Festival kicks off its 16th edition Friday in the northern Italian city of Udine.BRIn all, the jamboree will feature 60 film entries “from the best popular Asian cinema” including 15 international, 23 European, and two world premieres, organisers say.BRAlso included are “blockbusters, future cult movies, outsiders worth betting on and, as usual, the best auteur off-piste,” add organizers.BRThey say that the festival represents nine “different realities” drawn from Hong Kong, China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan “offering a broad and attentive perspective that does not discriminate mainstream quality work but wishes to bring into focus the whole of Asian production, both in its more cultured and in its more popular versions”.BRThis year spotlights documentaries for the first time, including ‘Boundless’ (shot on Johnnie To’s movie sets) and ‘The Search for Weng Weng,’ which promotes itself as returning to the scene “the craziest Asian actor: a lady-killer dwarf, kung-fu master, who in the Seventies was the Philippine version of James Bond”.BR/P
