EU finally tackling 'Mediterranean drama,' says Letta

(ANSA) – Rome, October 25 – Italian Premier Enrico Letta said Friday that the European Union had agreed “after many years and much lack of attention to face the drama of the Mediterranean” at the EU summit in Brussels. Around 400 people died in two migrant-boat disasters off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa this month. Letta added that the Netherlands had agreed to allocate aircraft for use by EU border agency Fontex in its operations in the southern Mediterranean.
